2005-01-10 - 9:25 a.m.

Will do a "real" entry later. but for now, here's this...

Stole this from capt-jim who in turn stole it from golf widow:

“According to the BBC, these are the fifty foods to eat before you die (the idea is to cross out the ones that you've eaten).

I am modifying the instructions to my own specifications, 'cos this is my diary and I can. I am not crossing off anything I have not had under the listed name (see Australian meat pie and Cornish pastry) and I am including my personal experiences (or lack thereof) with each item.”

1. Fresh fish
mmmmmm fresh fish. Of course, I’ve only had REALLY fresh fish two or three times. The best ever (EVER, I say) is rainbow trout. Oops…I drooled on myself a little bit..

2. Lobster
Very expensive, and I hate the way they cook them (very inhumane), but Damn Skippy! They are soooo tasty!

3. Steak
I’m from Alberta. Bring on the BSE! I loves me some STEAK!

4. Thai food
I think the only time I had thai food, it was the really spicy, pooping fire for a week kind. Ya, not too fond of that.

5. Chinese food
I’ve had American Chinese Food. Which is to say, the stuff you get at restaurants like sweet & sour pork, and egg rolls and stuff. Never had Authentic Chinese food, like chicken feet, etc. my son has. He likes it.

6. Ice cream
um, DUR! I can’t imagine someone not having ice cream at least ONCE in their lives!!

7. Pizza
Bring it on, baby.

8. Crab
Oh….Em…Gee!!! I adore crab. I practically lust after it. I could probably eat my body weight in crab. With drawn butter is best, but hey, if it’s crab, I’m not fussy.

9. Curry
I like very very weak curry. Nice flavour if it’s just a hint, but don’t like hot-spicy foot, and I find curry sort of overwhelming.

10. Prawns
Like em, but don’t get much chance to have real prawns. Living in the prairies, they tend to be a bit pricey.

11. Moreton Bay Bugs
Just about barfed even contemplating this one…until I looked it up and discovered it was like a lobster. Dammit. Sounds tasty, but alas, have never had em.

12. Clam chowder
Both the creamy kind (mmmmmmm) and the tomatoey kind (still good, just not AS good).

13. Barbecue
um, hello? I’m from ALBERTA!! Barbecue is like…..BREATHING!

14. Pancakes
lots of em, particularly at stampede time. While they’re tasty, they are nothing special.

15. Pasta
Love pasta.

16. Mussels
Pretty good. Shellfish are not my ultimate favorite, but I certainly wouldn’t say no to some lovely mussels with garlic butter and a french loaf to sop them up with..

17. Cheesecake
Yummy. I can think of better cakes to have, but I can’t say I ever met a cheesecake I didn’t like.

18. Lamb
While I do love lamb, it’s rather expensive, and as I get older I find it harder to eat baby animals. And if they raise them anything like they do the calves for veal?? I won’t eat it again.

19. Cream tea
Ok, I actually had to look this up. Turns out I’ve had it…many times. I adore clotted cream, and of course I frequently crave my mum’s scones….but I’ve never heard it called ‘cream tea’ before. Where have I been??

20. Alligator
Never had it, but think I would enjoy it..

21. Oysters
smoked and deep fried, but never had em raw. Someday I will try it, but I can’t get over the description of them being like eating snot….on a halfshell.

22. Kangaroo
Don’t think I’ll ever try this one….mostly because Alberta doesn’t seem to have any, and also because the only reason for me to eat it would be novelty. Why kill something just for the novelty of it?

23. Chocolate
Hello. Did I mention I’m female? We are genetically predisposed to love chocolate.

24. Sandwiches
*singing*….”Sandwiches are beautiful, sandwiches are fine, I like sandwiches I eat them all the time….” ( I told you, I even have a song I sing every time I eat sandwiches…didn’t you believe me??)

25. Greek food
Don’t know much about Greek food. Had a couple of things that would be considered greek, but that’s about it.

26. Burgers
I’m sorry, what century is this? Is there actually someone out there who hasn’t had a burger of some sort?? I’ve had beef, moose, chicken, tofu, salmon, TVP, veggie….you name it, I’ve burgered it.

27. Mexican food
Had a couple more authentic mexican meals (very tasty, as long as it’s not too spicy), but usually the extent of my Mexican dining consists of Taco Bell.

28. Squid
Squid is ok if it’s deep fried and all that, but otherwise I find it doesn’t have much flavor, and is just chewy..

29. American diner breakfast
Or as I like to call it…Truck Stop Food. There is a truck stop down on 9th ave that has THE best breakfast ever. I’ve never had hash browns so good!.

30. Salmon
love salmon. I can’t think of a single way I would not like salmon…oh, except maybe for that candied salmon stuff I see at the grocery store every now and then. Candied FISH??? Um…no.

31. Venison
yummy. Yes, I ate bambi’s mother. We barbecued her. She was delicious.

32. Guinea pig
Couldn’t eat this one. As I have 9 very friendly, lovely, cute and wonderful guinea pigs at home as pets, it would be hard to eat one thinking, “this could be Buttercup’s auntie!” also, same as for kangaroo, the only reason I could see eating one would be for novelty. Unless of course I find myself stranded in peru…..

33. Shark
had it a couple of times. Very good. Tastes kinda like fish, but has a texture more like meat. I’ve had shark fin once or twice too, kinda weird. Not even sure how to describe it.

34. Sushi
Love it. Could eat it every damn day.

35. Paella
never had it, but at least I know what this one is..

36. Barramundi
Knew what this one was too, but never had it. It’s an Australian thing. Alberta is a long way from Australia.

37. Reindeer
not sure that this would be much different from deer or elk, so I’d probably like it. But I’ve never had it.

38. Kebab
what kind? I’ve had beef, chicken, pork, shrimp and veggie. All were tasty.

39. Scallops
oh yes. Very tasty. Very expensive. Nuff said.

40. Australian meat pie
no idea what this is. Is it made with real Australians?.

41. Mango
oh yummy yummy. The only thing I don’t like is the peeling/cutting. I hate fruit that drips down your arms/chin. Yucky sticky. But the flavour? Oh devine..

42. Durian fruit
ok, technically I didn’t “eat” it. I sorta….licked a little piece of it…and then threw it in the garbage, double bagged it, and put it waaaaaay far out on the curb, where we could STILL smell it! It’s like someone strained rotted onions through a dirty gym sock…with a sauce made of dead dog and blue cheese.

43. Octopus
same as with squid..

44. Ribs
Did I mention I was from ALBERTA? Ahem. Ya. Ribs. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

45. Roast beef
Love roast beef. I like it barbecued, but my favorite is traditional English roast…with roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, buckets of gravy, horseradish, mmmmmm. Oops. Drooled again.

46. Tapas
I thought these were just appetizers…but I get the impression it is somehow…more?

47. Jerk chicken/pork
I think I’ve had jerk chicken….pretty sure. But I couldn’t for the life of me tell you what it was like.

48. Haggis
never had it. Not grossed out by it. I mean, why is eating the liver and kidneys and organ bits any different from eating the ribs, or the flank or the butt?? I just don’t care for the flavor of organ meat. at some point, though, i would like to try it...preferably while IN scotland, staring at handsome men in kilts

49. Caviar
oh to be filthy, dirty, stinky rich. I would eat caviar like most people eat potato chips..

50. Cornish pastry
hmm, couldn’t even count the number of times I’ve eaten these. Love em. They’re like comfort food to me. My mum makes them regularly. I’ve only made them once or twice, because 1) I hate making pastry. And 2) dammit, they are a lot of work!!! I’d rather just go to mum’s for dinner when she’s having them. (oh, and it's cornish PASTY not PASTRY)
